Gyan has been working in the area of promoting and coordinating community choral events and facilitating workshops and concerts for visiting artists for the last ten years. She has coordinated ten RhythmSong music camps since 2000, and has been organising Gospel singing weekends for Tony Backhouse since 2003.
Through RhythmSong, in association with Rosie Johnstone, and prior to that through Voice Moves WA, Gyan has brought a number of quality artists to Western Australia who have gone on to forge fruitful links with the WA community. These include Rachel Hore, Valanga Khoza, Stephen Taberner, Joseph Jordania, Greg Sheehan, Carl Pannuzzo, Penny Larkins, Kavisha Mazzella, Andrea Watson, Parissa Bouas of the Hottentots and Kristina Olsen. Gyan has a passion for world and original music, travelling to Georgia in 2006 and 2010 to attend the biennial symposium in polyphonic music.
Gyan is a member of the group Shalva who sing Georgian and East European music.
She is committed to creating opportunities for people to discover the joy and inherently life affirming qualities of music and other creative pursuits.

Tony Backhouse returns to WA for another inspirational a cappella workshop in Black Gospel and related styles. Tony is a fantastic teacher of Afro-American Gospel music. He facilitates workshops in New Zealand, Australia and internationally and has a remarkable ability to inspire other people.

RhythmSong in 2011 was full of highlights. The tutors and the participants combined to create a rich and heartful time, full of music, fun and celebration. Thanks to Carl Pannuzzo, Parissa Bouas, Jo Jo Smith, Marie O’Dwyer and Bec Bradley for being so generous with their talent and energy. Thanks also to all those other people, too many names, who helped make it happen. The youth concert was again a major highlight.
The songwriting stream will continue this year with guest songwriter Eva Popov from Melbourne. Diana Clark, also from Melbourne, will be the singing/voice facilitator and Steve Richter, outstanding Fremantle percussionist, will be the key rhythm person. Cathie Travers, a magician on accordian will be a guest artist/tutor and Marie O’Dwyer will be teaching guitar and supporting the youth programme. Bec Bradley another specialist in rhythm, along with many other talents will be sharing some of what she’s learning in the Taketina course she is studying with Tania Bosak as well as teaching yoga.
That already feels like a rich and inspiring programme.
There will again be youth scholarships and Tig is in place as the caterer of choice.

Shalva is a six person vocal ensemble with a passion for Eastern European music.
They sing a mixture of lively and soulful music from many countries, including Bulgaria, Georgia, Estonia and Israel.
From March Shalva will be having a three month hiatus as a couple of their members will be overseas so take the opportunity to come along and listen to some beautiful and unusual music while you can.
